Niles High School Sports & Competition Field Ribbon Cutting

VK Civil recently had the privilege of attending the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Viking Stadium at Niles High School. VK was hired by CARMI Design Group to assist with the civil engineering design of a new track and artificial turf football field. The project turned out great and the first sporting event happened on the field right after the celebration. Congrats to Niles on your new track and field!

VK Civil Christmas in October

Yes, you read the headline correctly. Our team Christmas party was in October!! Spouses and family members joined our team for an evening of paint pouring and tacos. Some of the engineers fixated on how to exactly mix paint and water to get the ideal pouring consistency, while everyone experimented with color combinations and techniques. VK Civil seeks to plan ahead and be prepared through weekly leadership meetings, quarterly planning meetings, and constant communication. If you are looking for a great environment where the team enjoys working and playing together, give us a call and let’s start a conversation! [...]

AIA Presentation – Civil Engineering Site Selection Considerations

Dan Lewis had the pleasure of presenting “Civil Engineering Site Selection Considerations” to the American Institute of Architect’s Southwest Michigan Branch recently. Custer hosted the presentation from their beautiful offices on the 15th Floor of the Exchange Building in downtown Kalamazoo.  The views were awesome! If your architectural firm would like more information on this subject, we are happy to come to your office and present directly to your staff. These presentations are eligible for 1 hour of educational credit.  Just contact Dan Lewis at dan@vkcivil.com to set something up.

Ice Cream Trucks, Magic & Near Death Experiences

“I’m not stopping!!!” Unsuspecting riders were in for a huge scare if they hadn’t seen others ride the zipline before them at the VK Civil Family Picnic. Hurdling down at breakneck speeds directly toward a tree with no slowing down until just before impact caused excitement for some while others bailed early to save their lives! For those not a fan of ziplines, the magic show and ice cream truck were just the thing for kids and adults alike. The food, yard games, great conversations and a fun evening were had by all. Looking for a great environment where [...]

APWA Rod Korhorn Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing

The American Public Works Association (APWA) Midwest Michigan Branch held another very successful golf outing on Wednesday July 20, 2022. Thirty two teams participated, the weather was beautiful, and fun was had by all. The event funds the Rod Korhorn Memorial Scholarship that the Midwest Branch gives to a child of a Branch member pursuing an education in Engineering or a Public Works related field. Rod served on the Midwest Branch board before his passing in 2014. Vriesman & Korhorn extends our sincere thanks to Midwest Branch for helping to keep Rod’s memory alive and to those who participated [...]

EGLE’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Program

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is helping to address drinking water infrastructure needs throughout Michigan with the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) loan program. The DWSRF program is designed to assist water suppliers in satisfying requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and improving drinking water quality by offering low-interest loans. Water suppliers who own either a community water supply or a non-community water supply that operates as a non-profit (which typically would need to bond through another eligible entity) can qualify to receive DWSRF assistance. Qualified water suppliers may apply to borrow [...]

Vriesman & Korhorn (VK Civil) Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary!

This week marks the ten-year anniversary of VK Civil. On August 30, 2011, Rod Korhorn and Nate Vriesman began operating from Nate’s unfinished basement. There was not a lot of work in Michigan because of the “Great Recession,” and Rod and Nate did not know how their past and prospective clients would react. “My back-up plan was to deliver pizzas,” said Nate smiling. “Each of us had young families which made it a stressful decision.” Within a couple of months Byron, Gaines, and Jamestown Townships decided that they would use VK Civil for their civil engineering services. Rod passed [...]
